Are you frustrated by the change in your weekly grocery bill? Eating healthfully doesn't have to mean shelling out extra cash. A few simple substitutions can make the South Beach Diet more economical.
Fruits and Vegetables: Local produce that's in season will be cheaper than imported produce that may be out of season. Look for weekly sales and keep in mind that it’s perfectly find to stock up on produce from the frozen food aisle.
Meat: Beef tends to be pricey. If you can't afford beef, choose chicken or pork. Buying chicken with the bone in and skin on can also save you money. Just make sure you remove the fatty skin and choose lean white breast meat for both chicken and turkey.
Oil: Extra-virgin olive oil is ideal but it can be expensive. To save money, use canola oil instead. You'll still get the healthy unsaturated fats and, as a bonus, you'll get a dose of heart-healthy omega-3s.
Fish: Fresh fish is rarely affordable unless you find it on sale. To reap the benefits of fish while on a budget, look for specials or buy frozen or canned. What's more, since canned fish often contains some small, edible bones, it has the extra benefit of being rich in calcium.
