5 Ways to Save Money on the South Beach Diet

In today's economy, we've all become more mindful of where our money goes. The good news is that you can easily follow the South Beach Diet without having to take a hit to your wallet. Here's how:

  1. Adapt recipes to fit your budget. The South Beach Diet recipes are good places to go for inspiration for your daily meals. However, a recipe containing 10 or more ingredients might be costlier than you'd like right now. To save money, adapt the recipes to fit your budget, or plan your own meals with the ingredients you have on hand. Once you grasp the principles of the South Beach Diet lifestyle, you'll have all the knowledge you need to create your own healthful recipes.

  2. Plan your meals in advance. Before you hit the grocery store, know exactly what meals you plan to make for the next two or three days, or even the next week. Make a list of items you'll need, and don't stray from the list.

  3. Keep the menu simple. One of the best ways to save money and reduce waste is to keep your meals on the simple side. Versatile foods such as grilled lean meat or fish, steamed vegetables, and simple salads can work well for dinner any night of the week. Leftovers can be used for lunch the following day.

  4. Don't overbuy fresh produce. Fresh vegetables pose the biggest challenge for shoppers trying to save money. It can be tempting to pick up extra vegetables from the produce aisle, but veggies spoil quickly. To avoid waste, don't overbuy at the market. Instead, buy just what you need for the next few days, and use up what you have before buying more. Reducing waste is the first step toward saving money.

  5. Use leftovers creatively. If you cook a big meal on weekends and plan to eat the leftovers throughout the week, make sure you use airtight containers to prevent spoilage. Also, some foods may lose their appeal after one or two days. To make them more appetizing, use them as the base for another dish. For example, a roast chicken can be eaten for three to four days, and after that, you can use any leftover meat to make soup. And toss any leftover veggies in while you're at it!
